Overview
Combined Forms is a publication by Anthony Burrill and Oswin Tickler. Impressions of wood letter type are arranged by code to produce unique compositions which investigate the abstract nature of letterforms.
For each page of the publication a separate piece of code generates new artwork through the combination of fixed and variable parameters. The number and size of letterforms are fixed, while their placement and angle of rotation is random.
Burrill and Tickler share an interest in type and its inherent abstract qualities. The duo discussed ways of utilising historic letterforms and coding to produce an automatic compositional system. The resulting publication questions typography and explores its use as an image making tool when unbound from the restrictions of language.
