Ampersand Chair

Overview

Originally designed by Charles and Ray Eames, this moulded plywood group dining chair was reimagined with a bespoke graphic by Anthony Burrill. The design features a repeating interlocking ampersand motif, hand-painted by sign-writer Alex Rayment, bringing a tactile quality to the piece and celebrating the craft of hand-painted typography.

The flowing geometry of Burrill’s ampersand responds naturally to the chair’s organic curves. As the pattern wraps across the moulded plywood surface, it follows the chair’s contours, creating a dialogue between graphic and form. Rather than simply decorating the object, the typography becomes an integral part of its sculptural character.

Commissioned by The Furniture Practice, the project brought together graphic design, craftsmanship and modern furniture design to raise funds for The Peel.

The Granary Studio and Garden

Overview

Anthony Burrill’s studio is set within the rural landscape of the Kent and East Sussex border, where open fields and expansive skies provide a fitting backdrop to his clear, optimistic approach to graphic art. Housed in a simple contemporary building designed by England Architecture on the footprint of former farm stables, the light-filled studio reflects Burrill’s belief in simplicity, craftsmanship and the enduring value of analogue making.
